About Us

Safer Futures Staff Members

Safer Futures started in 1996, working with local government in the Cowichan Valley. Our first job was to do a series of 'community audits.' We worked with community residents looking at safety issues (eg. poor lighting, inaccessible public areas etc.) that focused on women, children and other vulnerable groups.

Many people brought forward recommendations. These ranged from physical improvements to programs and services. Some people talked about developing policies to be included in Official Community Plans.

We are still working with local governments. Over the years, we have grown to take on many community development and research initiatives. We work both here in the Cowichan Valley and throughout the province promoting planning for safer communities.

Our Areas of Expertise

Municipal Planning
We know how local government planning works. Since Safer Futures first opened its doors, we have worked closely with local government to make community safety an important part of municipal planning and policies.

Community Involvement
We know how to get community partners involved, especially people who have difficulty taking part for any number of reasons.

Manuals and Guides
Our community-based research projects include: Women and Community Safety Manual; the Cowichan Valley Safety Audit Guide; Planning for Safer Communities Guide.

Education, Training, and Consultation
We offer workshops and seminars for citizens, professional groups and community organizations both in the Cowichan Valley and beyond.

We have experience in public space design and management consultation.

One of our strong specialities is community safety initiatives.
