Cairnsmore Community

Safer Futures is working closely with residents and organizations in the Cairnsmore neighbourhood. We want to:
  • help people who live and work in these communities address the aims of the Neighbourhood Action Plan.
  • bring together local community groups and local government so that everyone is sharing information and working together.
Here are some things we've been doing:
  • Neighbourhood Action Group: We've brought together residents, school staff (administration and students), community organizations, church representatives and the City of Duncan to discuss safety issues and quality of life for people in the Cairnsmore neighbourhood.
  • We've hosted community events to bring people together. This includes recreation activities for seniors, youth and residents of a large, apartment complex in Cairnsmore.
  • We are working closely with the Cowichan Valley Open Learning Co-op School (CVOLC). The school has set in motion plans to construct a community bulletin board on school property, a mural to be painted by students and a school produced neighbourhood video.
  • Serenity House: Plans are underway to have a family care home for new moms and their babies in the Cairnsmore area. Serenity House will also feature a child care centre. Safer Futures is working with the Serenity Child and Parent Society and the Neighbourhood Action Group to find a suitable site and funding for the home.
  • Open Space and Community Gardens: Safer Futures is working to support the Cowichan Green Society's Community Garden Project. Growing Together Child and Parent Society and the Cairnsmore Place Seniors Care Centre are both actively involved. If successful, the gardens will be for seniors living in the apartment building across from the seniors centre.
  • Getting The Word Out: One of the members of our Neighbourhood Action Group e-mails local residents to keep them up-to-date on local events and activities. She also mobilized citizens to donate towels and face cloths for homeless people.
  • Centennial Park Revitalization Plan: Safer Futures is working with the City of Duncan to improve Centennial Park. A walking circuit is part of the plan and the City is planning to begin work this year.

Meet your neighbours. Find out what's happening. Get involved!
