Community Development
Community Development
About Us
Safer Futures began in 1996 working in partnership with local governments in the Cowichan Region to undertake a series of community safety audits that focused on women, children and other vulnerable groups.
This work resulted in hundreds of recommendations and actions ranging from simple physical improvements, to community services and programming, to policy development in Official Community Plans.
Since then, we have continued to work with local governments and have grown into a multi-faceted community development and research program working both locally and provincially to promote effective Planning for Safer Communities.
Our main areas of activity are:
- conducting research
- leading action-based projects
- developing collaborative community partnerships
- encouraging proactive programming and policies to guide community development
Our Purpose
In its broadest sense, the purpose of the Safer Futures program is to:
- create and maintain community environments which promote safety of women and children in public places, in work places and in their homes
- work to improve existing community environments to make them safer
- develop long term planning policies and processes that will foster safer community environments over the long term
- increase awareness, encourage participation and mobilize the community at all levels about the issues and ways in which communities can work together to foster changes
Our Vision
Using an integrated, feminist approach to community and social development, Cowichan Valley Safer Futures seeks to promote safer, healthier and more equitable communities for all.
Through research, education and community action, we build equitable access to, and create innovation in, community planning.
