James-Alexander Community
Safer Futures is working closely with residents and organizations in the James-Alexander neighbourhoods. We want to:
- help people who live and work in these communities to plan for the future and to have a say in what's happening around them.
- bring together local community groups and North Cowichan municipal planners so that everyone is sharing information and working together.
Here are some things we've been doing:
- Proposal Writing: We worked with the Cowichan Family Life Association to submit a proposal to Success by Six (a local early childhood advocacy organization) for outreach programming in a neighbourhood housing complex.
- Violence Prevention Workshop: First Nations and non-First Nations youth attended a 'Respectful Relationships Program' co-sponsored with Cowichan Tribes.
- School Community Connection: Alexander and Quamichan Schools' Project: We are working closely with School District 79 and Gamella Consulting in the design of a neighbourhood friendly recreation area on the school property.
- Kinsmen Park: We have been involved in the community engagement, planning and construction of the Kinsmen Park Community Garden. The garden is for community residents to grow their own vegetables. The initiative is spearheaded by Cowichan Green Community.
- Housing and Neighbourhood Resource Centre: We are working closely with the Canadian Mental Health Association and Social Planning Cowichan to encourage neighbourhood residents to be invloved in the planning and operations of the new centre.
- Neighbourhood Plan: We are working with the District of North Cowichan to develop an overall development plan fo the area. Our role will be ensure that the plan encourages community safety and quality of life.
